Using Catalog

The Catalog… sub-menu of the Tools menu allows you to insert easily in the command window Greek letters and symbols which don't appear in the Selection window.

Using Catalog to insert letters or symbols

  • Choose in the Insert menu the Object sub-menu, then the Formula item. The command window appears in the bottom of your document
  • Choose in the Tools menu the Catalog… sub-menu
  • Choose in the Symbol set the item Greek or Special in the pop-up menu
  • Select in the list to the left, the Greek letter ot the symbol you want to insert in your formula. Click Insert.

Modifying or deleting symbols of the Catalog

To modify a symbol of the Catalog:

  • Choose in the Insert menu the Object sub-menu then the Formula item. The command window appears in the bottom of your document
  • Choose in the Tools menu the Catalog… sub-menu, then choose Special in the Symbol set pop-up menu
  • Select the symbol you want to modify or delete, then click Edit…
  • In the window which opens, you can choose another character and another name for the symbol. When your modifications are done, click Modify then OK
  • In case you wish to delete this symbol, click Delete then OK.

Adding symbols to Catalog

You can add customized symbols to those which are available in the Select window and in the symbol set Special of the tool Catalog. Let us assume that you want to add the implication and logical equivalence arrows.

  • Choose in the Insert menu the Objetc sub-menu, then the Formula item. The command window appears in the bottom of your document
  • Choose in the Tools menu the Catalog… sub-menu, then click Edit in the dialog which opens.
  • Give a name to your new set of symbols (e.g. Arrows) and to the new symbol (e.g. impl for implication)
  • Choose the font and the character you want to use
  • Click Add and OK.

The new set of symbols is created. You can add other arrows in it.

Writing a binary operator (as union or intersection) as a large operator (as int or sum)

It may be useful e.g. for writing the intersection or the union of a family of sets. The symbols union and intersection are too small.

  • Add to Catalog a set of personal symbols as described in the above section
  • Type e.g. the symbol union in your personal set of symbols
  • To use the symbol, you'll have to entrer oper%union. Type e.g

oper%union from i in I A_i
to get the union of a family of sets, where the union symbol has the appropriate size. Réunion d'une famille of sets
