Charts created in NeoOffice Calc can be inserted into a Writer document or an Impress presentation by copying and pasting or dragging and dropping. But in this case, they are not automatically updated when the data from which they were created are modified. In order to automatically update those charts, you must do as follows:

Inserting the chart

  • In your Calc document create the chart on a sheet different from the one which contains the data, and place it at the top left of this sheet. Select this sheet by clicking on its tab.
N.B. If your set of data contains only few lines, it's possible that the inserted object doesn't display correctly in your text document. In that case, it's better to insert the chart into the data sheet then copy/paste it to a new sheet.
  • Save this file
  • In the Writer document, go to the Insert menu, then to the Object sub-menu and choose the OLE Object… item
  • In the dialog Insert OLE Object, select NeoOffice 2.1 Spreadsheet and check Create from file
  • Check the Link to file box
  • Click on Search and navigate to the file saved above
  • Select that file and click Open
The URL of the file appears in the Insert OLE Object window
  • Click OK
  • If the sheet of data is displayed instead of the chart, double click on the OLE object and click on the tab of the sheet which contains the chart. Click outside of the OLE frame to return to the Writer document.

Updating the chart

  • Change the data in your spreadsheet and save the changes

If you didn't close the Writer document, follow the steps below:

  • Select the chart
  • Choose the Edit menu then the Links… sub-menu
  • In the dialog that opens select, if necessary, the approriate file
  • Click Update
  • Double-click on the chart. A grey border appears around the chart which looks like a spreadsheet
  • Select the sheet containing the chart by clicking on its tab.
  • Click outside of the OLE frame in order to return to the Writer document

If you have closed the Writer document:

  • Open it
  • Click Yes in the dialog which appears with "Update all links?"
  • If the sheet of data is displayed instead of the chart, double click on the OLE object and click on the tab of the sheet which contains the chart. Click outside of the OLE frame to return to the Writer document.

Follow the same steps to insert and update a chart in an Impress presentation.
