Due to the fact that only RetroOffice is rarely downloaded and the fact that the NeoOffice project's webservers have limited disk space, RetroOffice is no longer available for download. We recommend that you use NeoOffice instead.

What is RetroOffice?

RetroOfficeâ„¢ is a Macintosh version of OpenOffice.org that includes the ooo-build code used by most Linux distributions (rather than the stock OpenOffice.org code used by Sun Microsystems and OpenOffice.org Mac OS X (X11)).

RetroOffice is an X11 program and requires Mac OS X 10.3 or higher and Apple's X11 implementation (/Applications/Utilities/X11.app). RetroOffice is available for both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macintoshes.

Who should use RetroOffice?

Most Mac users should use NeoOffice. Only users who are comfortable with UNIX and X11 should use RetroOffice. If you don't already know that you should use RetroOffice, you don't want to use it.

RetroOffice is made available as-is and is unsupported. If you need to use software which accepts bug reports or provides support forums, you should use NeoOffice instead.

Why is RetroOffice available?

RetroOffice is being made available because there continues to be a small group of technical users who use X11 apps on their Macs as part of their daily work.

Since the code that makes up RetroOffice is generated as part of the normal NeoOffice build process, it is relatively simple to provide RetroOffice binaries for X11 users and for the NeoOffice community testers and bug triage team members (who will use RetroOffice to help determine if a bug is in NeoOffice code, ooo-build code, or shared OpenOfffice.org code).

Comparison

If you are interested in an X11 solution, the following comparison might help you understand the differences between RetroOffice and OpenOffice.org Mac OS X (X11).

Tips and Hints for Using RetroOffice

Most tips and hints from the OpenOffice.org X11 Tips and Tricks page apply to RetroOffice.

Reporting bugs in RetroOffice

RetroOffice is made available as-is and is unsupported. There are no avenues for reporting RetroOffice bugs.

However, if you can reproduce a RetroOffice bug in the Mac version of OpenOffice.org, you can report your bug in the OpenOffice.org IssueZilla, as the bug exists in shared code that is the responsibility of OpenOffice.org developers. See here for details. For purposes of the Found in version: field in IssueZilla, RetroOffice 2.2.1 and 2.2.2 are the equivalent of OpenOffice.org 2.2.1.
