NeoOffice allows you to protect a document, a sheet, or individual cells in a Calc document. These three types of protection are different
Whatever type of protection you need, you have to enter a password to activate and deactivate it.

If you forget your password, you will not be able to deactivate that protection.

Protecting a Document or a Sheet

  • The protection of the document prevents the sheet structure of the document from modifications. For example, it is impossible to move, delete, insert or rename the sheets. But you can edit them.
  • The protection of a sheet prevents modifiication of the contents and the format of all the cells of that sheet.
  • If you select the Format menu, then the Cells… item, and if you click on the Cell Protection tab, you notice that the Protected box in the Protection section is checked by default. If you want to protect a document or a sheet, don't modify that option.
    • To protect the document, choose the Tools menu, then the Protect Document submenu and select Document…. In the window that appears, enter a password and confirm it. Click OK.
    • To activate the protection of a sheet, choose the Tools menu, then the Protect Document submenu and select Sheet…. In the window that appears, enter a password and confirm it. Click OK.

Protecting Individual Cells

Sometimes, you want to protect only certain cells in a sheet while allowing others to be modified. In this case, the method is a bit more complex.

  • Select the whole sheet containing the cells to be protected, by pressing Command-A.
  • Go to the Format menu, and click on Cells….
  • In the Cell Protection tab of the Format Cells window which opens, uncheck Protected.
  • Click OK.
  • Come back into the sheet which contains the cells you want to protect, select them. They don't need to be adjacent.
  • Go to the Tools menu, choose the Protect Document sub-menu and click on Sheet….
  • Enter a password and confirm it. Click OK.
  • Go to the Format menu, then click on Cells….
  • In the Cell Protection tab, in the Format Cells window, check Protected.
Note : you can protect both the document and one or more sheets or the document and individual cells.

Unprotecting document or cells

  • To cancel the protection of the document, go to the Tools menu. Then in the Protect Document sub-menu, select the Document… item. A window will appear asking for the password in order to unprotect the document. Enter the password and click OK.
  • To cancel the protection of a sheet or of individual cells in a sheet, go to the sheet which contains them, select the Tools menu, then the Protect Document, and remove the check mark of the Sheet… item. A window will appear asking for the password in order to unprotect the sheet. Enter the password and click OK.
