While OpenOffice.org includes a specific preference setting for the default font in Writer, this preference setting does not exist in the other modules (Calc, Draw, Impress).

In order to set the default font for all new Calc, Impress, or Draw documents, you must create or modify the default styles in those modules and save the modified styles in a template that you then set as the default template for that module.

This sounds confusing, but it's really not that bad; in addition, you can customize all the features you want all new documents to have from the start.

To set the default font or other features for all new Calc, Impress, or Draw documents, simply follow the instructions in Setting the Default Style, Layout and Styles Available in New Documents section of Editing Default Styles and Using Templates.
