In Calc it is possible to drag and drop a cell range by using only the mouse. You get the same result as if you were using the copy-paste or cut-paste functionality, but nothing is put in the clipboard.

Contents

Selecting a Cell Range or a Single Cell

  • To select a cell range drag the cursor on it, or click on the first cell at the top left, then press on the Shift key and click on the last cell at the bottom right.
  • To select a single cell, click once on it, then click on it again whilst pressing the Shift key.

As a single cell is technically just a range consisting of one cell, in the following the term cell range will refer equally to a range made up of one or more cells.

Dragging and Dropping in the same sheet

Copying a cell range

  • Select the range you want to copy.
  • Release the mouse button.
  • Whilst holding the Opt key, click in the first cell in the range where you want to paste a copy of the selected range.

The original range is copied into the new location without being deleted.

Moving a cell range

  • Select the range you want to move.
  • Release the mouse button.
  • Click on any cell in the selected range, then start to drag the pointer. It takes the appearance of a hand.
  • Drag the pointer to the desired location and release the mouse button.

The cell range is moved to the chosen location and the original one is deleted.

Dragging and Dropping between two different sheets

Copying a cell range

  • Select the range you want to copy.
  • Go to the Data menu and choose Define Range….
  • Give this range a name, for example CopyTest and click on Add. Click on OK.

This range is listed in the Navigator. To copy it afterwards, as often as you want, apply the following method:

  • Select the sheet in which you want to copy this range.
  • Open the Navigator by going in the Edit menu, then selecting Navigator.
  • Click on the little triangle on the left side of Database Ranges.
  • Select the CopyTest range, right click or Control-click on this rectangle.
  • Choose Drag Mode then Insert as Copy in the contextual menus.
  • Drag the rectangle CopyTest from the Navigator to the location where you want to copy this range.

The original range is copied into this location without being deleted.
Note: the two sheets may belong to two different documents.

Moving a cell range

  • Select the range you want to move.
  • Click on the selected cell(s) and drag the cursor quickly down to the target sheet tab (the quickly part fools NeoOffice into not scrolling the page!)
  • The new sheet will come to the front, and then you can drop the selected-cell frame where you want the cell(s) moved to.

If you're working within the same document, the original range is deleted.
If the two sheets are in different documents, the original range is copied into the new location without being deleted.

Note: you can, of course, use the usual copy/paste or cut/paste methods to copy or move a cell range. In each case, the range is copied to the clipboard, overwriting its contents (unless you have multiple clipboard capability).
